Mission Trip Diary – June 2nd

Today we got to start organising what we’ll be doing during our time here in Costa Rica. Turns out I will be the lead (chief, and only) Pharmacist in charge of all the medicines during the medical clinics we’ll be running. Talk about putting my degree to good, hard use. I’m definitely looking forward to it though, the whole medical team will be trusting and relying on me for correct prescribing and drug handling, big responsibility but by the grace of God we’ll get it right. So excited to serve the local community in the way!

I’ve met so many amazing people since I’ve been here already!

I was sat next to a pilot during one leg of my journey who talked me through the landing process, and it’s actually quite deep.

We were flying at night, and looking out the window was truly a beautiful sight as all you could see were city lights of the building below. He then pointed out the window and said “can you see those blinking lights there?” In my head I’m thinking there are millions of lights, and you want me to pick out some tiny specific ones? I eventually did see the ones he was making reference to, and he then said

“That’s what a pilot looks for when he’s landing. He has to pick out those two blinking lights from the assortment of flashing lights, because that’s the landing strip”

It struck me because I believe that is a good analogy for our Christian life. It’s like we are flying at night with so many lights below us during our travel, but we have got to look the two small blinking lights because they will lead us to where we need to be. It’s hard, because there are so many, but we have to focus.

In life we have so many distractions, so many lights below us that if we focus on, we will miss our “landing strip” but we have got to learn to focus on what is important, the voice of God in the midst of the noise. The bible says my sheep hear my voice, and the voice of a stranger they do not here. That means all the lights should mean nothing to us, and just as an experienced pilot knows the flashing lights to focus us, we must know the voice of God and focus on them so we can reach our destinations safely, and guide those around us to “land safely.”

Spend some time with God today, learn to decipher His voice from the midst of all the madness.

John 10:4 “….the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers”

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me
